MAKOM’s journey began in 2012, inspired in the wake of national social protests and a renewed understanding that real change happens from the ground up. Several organizations and movements came together to establish a joint council with a clear goal from the first moment: to join hands for Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) within Israeli society and to strengthen the country’s social fabric by developing and expanding the mission-driven communities enterprise.
What began as a dialogue between organization representatives .soon transformed into a strong national network operating as a registered non-profit organization.
MAKOM brings together all sectors of Israeli society: alumni of socialist youth movements alongside members of Torah-focused religious groups, local residents from the Ethiopian-Israeli community working with new pioneers relocating to Israel’s northern and southern frontiers, Druze and Jews, Ba’al Tshuvah (newly religious) communities building Israel’s future with pluralistic or secular young adults and families. Together, everyone maintains their unique organizational identity while partnering in a collective effort to promote the lifestyle of a mission-driven community.
A mission-driven community is much more than a shared living arrangement; it is a socially conscious choice made by a group of people to bind themselves together for long-term goals, deeply rooted in the heart of Israel’s geographic and social periphery.
These mission-driven communities operate along two parallel axes:
creating a supportive, vibrant, and active community that fosters a shared lifestyle and mutual responsibility.
taking active steps to transform the daily reality of the towns and cities where they live.
is where the magic happens. it is the perfect catalyst that sparks long-term change where Israel needs it the most.
MAKOM brings over 25 years of collective experience and a proven track record in initiating and establishing mission-driven change-makers and spearheading urban community transformation and renewal.
Our community members work directly within local neighborhoods, education systems, and community centers, guided by a deep commitment to the Zionist vision of building a more cohesive and just society.
By uniting under MAKOM, they form a vital part of a large-scale national movement that creates a real, lasting impact on the future of the country.
The broad forum that shapes the organization’s path.
It is comprised of approximately 50 representatives from the leadership of MAKOM’s partner movements and networks, proportional to the size of each movement.
The social entrepreneurs that turn vision into reality.
